I am the Foodie in Exile, a title I gave myself when I discovered that I was having issues with food. For those of you who know me well, you know that I love to cook so this was quite a blow.

Good news is I am now eating right and I feel fabulous. The challenge is getting back to being a total scratch cooker and using organic produce and additive-free meats and dairy, which can be difficult to locate and still have a good variety. Here are some tips on shopping.

What is really great is the supply and selection of organic products you can find at your local supermarket. My choice is Publix. Though Fresh Market and Whole Foods are totally focused on organic products and green products you can find an excellent selection of the organic, additive-free products you need everyday at grocery stores like Publix.

What you are looking for, regardless of the grocer, are products free of antibiotics, hormones and preservatives. Steer clear of process foods of any kind. If you can’t pronounce the ingredient perhaps you should select a different option.

Then there are specialty shops. They can supplement your standard grocery store run but you don’t have to go out of your way to make a big impact on your daily diet. Check out the line of organic products in your favorite grocery store. Use the basic economic principle of supply and demand. Encourage your grocer to add to their organic line and support them with your business.

Shopping healthy is the first step to eating healthy.
